Maryland Stream Waders is a volunteer stream sampling program sponsored by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. This program relies on assessing the macroinvertebrate (e.g., stonefly, mayfly) population in streams as the numbers and species of these insects is a reliable indicator of stream health. Volunteers attend a one-day training session in March to learn how to collect the insect larva and then are assigned 2-6 streams in the Prettyboy watershed. Sample collection takes about 45 minutes per stream and is to be completed by the end of April. The samples are sent to the DNR where identification of the various insect populations takes place. To volunteer as a Stream Wader e-mail us. For additional information visit the DNR Website
