Reduce Nutrients

Usually we think of nutrients as a good thing.  It brings to mind vitamins and minerals that are essential for good health.  However the nutrients we are referring to are nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and they are essential for algal growth.  If N and P find their way into the water as a result of storm runoff, algae growth can really take off.  As they deplete N and P they die and their decomposition uses up oxygen creating "dead" zones.  Fish that venture into these regions die.

So don't fertilize if you don't need to.  Do a soil test - if you don't need fertilizer then you can save some money!

We also need to thank our farmers for planting cover crops after their corn and soybeans are harvested.  As these crops grow they take up excess N and P left in the fields.  As a result runoff from farm fields planted with cover crops contains a lot less N and P.
